Bytes against the limit
Counted as you type against a limit of 250 bytes, with the bytes you have left or a warning once the field is too long.
Backend search terms are limited in bytes, not characters, and umlauts and accented letters take 2 bytes each. Paste your keywords and see the count as you type. Nothing is uploaded.

Umlauts and accented letters such as ä, ö, ü, ß and é take 2 bytes, the euro sign 3. The counter lists each one it finds.
Words that appear more than once, in any capitalization, are flagged. A repeat uses bytes without adding reach.
All three side by side, so you can see what special characters cost you.
Coming soon in Central
Amazon is coming soon to Central. Search terms will be written from the verified record in each market's language, so every word describes the product, and counted in bytes before they are sent. Today Central already checks every listing against the rules of Google Merchant Center and eBay before it goes out.
Instead of cutting words by hand until the field fits, market by market.

The search terms field is limited in bytes. Plain letters and digits take 1 byte each, but umlauts and accented letters take 2, so a German or French field fills up faster than its character count suggests.
Search terms over the limit may not be indexed at all. Trim the field yourself instead of hoping only the last words are cut off.
